Saw this amazing image on Bing's homepage for China. Learned that it's the Danxia landform in Gansu Zhangye, China, which was added to UNESCO's World Heritage List in 2010. A Google image search on Danxia landform results in some wildly colorful images of the region. Some look artificially color enhanced, excessively saturated, but even the more natural-looking images are still stunning. It looks as if someone has mashed up a very colorful layer cake!

Faking It - Before Photoshop

cat and i
How did photographers manipulate images before computers? In many clever ways, sometimes by just cutting and pasting (literally). Sometimes they employed other methods such as exposure tricks or painting. The Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection of manipulated photos is being shown at the National Gallery of Art in DC this Spring. This show is being sponsored by (surprise!) Adobe. The photos are all mesmerizing and in some cases eerie and creepy. The WP has reviewed the show and the NGA has provided a catalog of the works on display.

A Photo for Each Day of the Year 2012

And since 2012 was a leap year, there are 366 photos selected by Time Magazine to illustrate the eventful year. The final picture chosen for the year was Hubble's stunning view of barred spiral galaxy NGC 1097, shown below.
